Progress in Heterocyclic Chemistry

Receive gratis individual copies of PHC on an annual basis. This important series is now well established and Volume 6 has already been published. Volume 7 will be available in late August 1995.

ChemKey Search Computer Database

Receive a substantial ($75) discount on the ChemKey Search Database. This computer database devotes particular attention to such areas of interest as heterocycles, synthetic methods, organometallic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, chirality, stereochemistry, and much more. It contains 40,000 references and is updated annually, adding about 10% to its size over a one-year period. References since 1960 are derived from all the significant journals, letters, papers, and other published material that are routinely and traditionally used by heterocyclic chemists. The keywords used for each article are well chosen and reflect the way a heterocyclic chemist would classify a particular reaction or topic. For a more detailed analysis of the database -- see software review published in J. Am. Chem. Soc., 1993, Vol. 115, p. 6474.

The Royal Society of Chemistry Perkin Division Heterocyclic Group

President: Chris Moody; Secretary: Ray Jones

Committee Members: Dr K Jones (King's College, London); Dr J M Berge(SB Pharmaceuticals) Professor P D Bailey (Heriot-Watt University); Dr C PDell (Lilly Research Centre)

The Heterocyclic Group held four scientific meetings during 1994. The annual one-day January meeting was held at KQC, followed by the 4th Joint Meeting with our Italian colleagues, held in Jersey in May. The ninth postgraduate meeting took place at University of Leicester on July 6, and again attracted a large audience to see ten talks from senior postgraduates and a poster session. The standards of science and presentation lived up to the tradition that we have created; we were again indebted to Zeneca Pharmaceuticals for sponsoring the book prizes that were presented to all contributors (one day your secretary will order the books in time for all of them to be presented at the meeting. The committee thanks Professor Paul Cullis for inviting us to the excellent Leicester venue, and Dr Bob Atkinson for local organisation. Zeneca Agrochemicals provided the venue (Jealott's Hill Research Centre, Bracknell) and sponsorship for the Autumn meeting on October 19. Our industrial colleagues again treated delegates to excellent hospitality, with matching science provided by the main speakers, Professors W N Speckamp (Amsterdam), D J Robins (Glasgow) and M A McKervey (Belfast), ably supported by Drs K R Lawson ]Zeneca Agrochemicals), M Moloney (Oxford) and J Leonard (Salford). Local organisation was by Dr John Clough, and we thank him and his colleagues for their efforts.

Forthcoming Meetings

1995: The traditional January meeting at King's College London (incorporating the Group AGM) was held on Friday 6 January 1995 on the Strand campus for the first time. The plenary lectures were given by Profs Upendra Pandit (Amsterdam) and Tom Brown (Edinburgh), and Dr Dick Storr (University of Liverpool), with supporting talks by Drs Charles Marson (Sheffield), Andrew Stachulski (Salford Ultrafine) and Richard Whitby (Southampton).

The AGM sees the retirement from the committee of Professor Pat Bailey; we thank him for his efforts. Our nomination for the vacancy as Ordinary Member is Dr John A Joule (University of Manchester); John has been a committee member in the past, but has been persuaded to stand again! Your Secretary/Treasurer also reaches the end of his three year term, but is being nominated by the committee to serve for a further year. Any other nominations should be sent to the Secretary by 20 December.

Other diary dates (1995) to be confirmed:

10th Postgraduate Meeting: July 1995, date and venue to be announced. Autumn Meeting: Glaxo Research & Development, at the new Stevenage site, Wednesday 18 October 1995.

The Twelfth Lakeland Heterocyclic Symposium

Grasmere 4 - 8 May, 1995

Information

The Twelfth biennial Lakeland Meeting of the Heterocyclic Group will be held between Thursday, 4 May and Monday, 8 May, 1995. The programme will include plenary lectures from the following:

Professor A Alexakis (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France)

Professor A G M Barrett (Imperial College, London, England)

Professor D P Curran (University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, USA)

Professor S E Denmark (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA)

Professor H-J Knölker (Universität Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany)

Professor S F Martin (University of Texas, Austin, USA)

Dr J K M Sanders (University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England)

Professor A Padwa (Emory University, Atlanta, USA) will deliver the 2nd `Professor Charles Rees Lecture'

The main speakers will be supported by other contributors [oral and, for the first time, poster] selected from registered delegates to create a balanced programme for the morning and evening scientific sessions. Afternoons will be free for informal exploration of the surrounding mountains or other recreational pursuits.

Accommodation for the Symposium will be based in the Wordsworth, Red Lion, Moss Grove and Rothay Garden Hotels in the centre of Grasmere Village. The evening social events will be centred at the first two of these venues; the scientific sessions will be held in the Grasmere Village Hall

The registration fee for full participants will be [[sterling]]100 for members of Heterocyclic Group and [[sterling]]150 for non-members; for retired or unemployed members [[sterling]]25; no registration fee is asked for accompanying members. At the present time we only have an estimate for the board and accommodation charges which will range from [[sterling]]220-[[sterling]]380 depending on the facilities required, from the Thursday evening (dinner) until Monday morning (lunch) inclusive of VAT. The Organising Committee will offer a limited number of bursaries for research students which will substantially cover their costs. Details are available from the Secretary.

Accompanying members will be especially welcome since their presence makes for more efficient occupation of hotel rooms and reduces the overall cost to all participants. The total number of participants, however, will be limited to 120 in order to maintain an informal atmosphere and not overstretch the dining facilities in the Wordsworth Hotel where the Symposium banquet will be held.

A second circular, with further details of the programme and accommodation arrangements has sent in January to registered participants. A deposit of [[sterling]]50 per person for the accommodation costs will be required on registration, with the balance being payable directly to the Hotel. The Grasmere meeting has proved to be one of the most popular of the Heterocyclic Group's functions in the past and early registration is advised.
